He is the Titular Archbishop of Vertara, and Secretary of the Congregation
for Catholic Education at the Vatican. Before that, beginning in 1997,
he was President of the University of St. Thomas in Houston. I did not
know him then, but was extended an invitation to attend his ordination
as Archbishop in St. Peter's in January 2004 by our family friend Msgr.
Rossi in Houston. I went to the ordination Mass and to the reception afterwards,
but did not officially meet him until April, when Pierluigi and I went
to his office overlooking St. Peter's Square to ask him to officiate our
wedding. He did us the tremendous honor of saying yes. He celebrated it
in Italian and in English, with the assistance of Padre Nello, who usually
officiates the nuptial Masses in the Basilica.
